American history looks good in uniform
October 15, 2007
On Saturday, mom and I went to Harper’s Ferry to “see the hanging!” as an older woman in the assembled crowd shrieked at the top of her lungs when one of the re-enactors asked why everyone was there.
It should be noted that there was no actual hanging. Not even a re-enactment of the hanging. There was simply a group of Civil War enthusiasts acting out the circumstances which LED to the hanging of the abolitionist, John Brown.
Most of the re-enactors were actual Marines.
Now you know, I’m very much a history buff as it is…but watching a bunch of beefy, sweaty Marines act out the particulars…well, it makes me want to don a hoop skirt and petticoat and churn some butter. Or whatever it is that American women occupied their time with a scant one hundred and thirty-four years ago.
Why, hello solider…my my, what a big musket you have! Do you need a place to stay tonight?? You do! Oh, wonderful! You can sleep in MY room!! Here, have some butter…
